Bear Book Info
Doc's unique method of hunting black bears — from a tree stand, at close range, over a bait crib, using positioning bait — has grown into the one of the top two methods of hunting black bears (the other using a pack of hounds).
It all started with Doc's first bear book, published in 1990. This book quickly became the bear hunter's bible.
In 2001, Doc updated his bear book. The main improvements in technique revolved around using “Bait Cribs” rather than “Bait Pits,” and the great innovation Doc call's “Positioning Bait” — this helps the bear hunter to get the perfect shot. After the last printing of this edition sold out, the prices of used 1st and 2nd editions skyrocketed on ebay and Amazon. There were copies selling for well over $100.
In 2014, Doc updated his bear book again. However, because of skyrocketing printing costs Doc decided to make his Third Edition an ebook. This is a great ebook with integrated color photos and HD video.
While many hunters love the Third Edition (an Apple iBook version), there were many requests for an Amazon Kindle version. In 2017, in this Fourth Edition, Doc updated his bear book again to be compatible for Amazon and the Kindle. However, this version does not have integrated color photos and HD video, so there is an optional DVD that has those.
Again, this DVD only has color photos and HD videos that are not included in the 4th Edition of Doc's bear book, the one sold on Amazon. If you purchase just this DVD, without the ebook, you will probably be disappointed.
In the old days Doc would print his Almanacs and Bear Books in quantities of 2,000 to 10,000. He sold tons of books! Literally. This year Doc discovered a great new low volume printer. This allows Doc to print smaller batches of books. This is great news for bear hunters. Doc has decided to go ahead and print his next bear book — his Fifth Edition — in paperback form. Now that 10th Whitetail Hunter's Almanac is done, Doc's son John is working on the Fifth Edition of the bear book. (It should be available in limited quantities in June of 2018.)
